Pre-reading question: Jose can throw a ball vertically at a speed 1.5 times faster than Kate can. How many times higher will Jose’s ball go than Kate’s?
Textbook reading: Section 4-3 (pages 88-92). You really need to understand everything in this section, so let me explain to you how to do that. First, read the Conceptual Checkpoint question 4-1 on page 90, but don’t read the “Reasoning and Discussion” or the “Answer.” Keeping that question in your mind, go back and read the first part of section 4-3 on page 88, including the problem-solving note on the side. Then, read the “Reasoning and Discussion” and “Answer” to the Conceptual Checkpoint on page 90. Second, read through example 4-3, making sure you understand why the textbook does each step. Third, Read the question in Conceptual Checkpoint 4-2 on page 92. Keeping that question in your mind, read “Parabolic Path” and “Landing Site” on page 90. Then, read the “Reasoning and Discussion” and “Answer” to the conceptual checkpoint on page 92. Finally, read through example 4-4, making sure you understand why the textbook does each step.
Hint for the future: The pattern I describe above is the best way to read pretty much any section in our textbook.
Post-reading question: Question 9 on page 104.
